Sika Deers - Vocalization
10 different sounds of Sika deer have been recorded. They are: soft whistles used by does, bleats used by does to communicate with fawns, neighs from fawn to does, loud screams produced by males, high-pitched whistles of alarm, etc.
Sika Deers - Habits
Sika deer prefer dense forests with occasional clearing, the ideal conditions for foraging and hiding. The males are territorial; territory size varies with size of the buck and type of habitat. Some individuals may hold up to 2 ha. Sikas mark their territory with scraps and holes and urinate there. During the rut Sika males are very aggressive to rivals, using antlers and hooves as weapons. The fights can be long and fatal.
The Sika deer is polygamous and males keep harems of females, which include up to 12 females in the course of the mating season. During the rut males lose 20-30% of their weight. Females associate with several bucks to gain access to their feeding location. During the calving season females and their fawns form groups of 2-3.
Sika deer are excellent swimmers, and can swim up to 12 km in the sea. As for running, they use gallop, making bounds of up to 3 meters in length. Sika deer can surmount obstacles up to 1.7 m in height.
